SALSA:
El Gran Combo’s 40th Anniversary live CD: It is amazing! This must-have 2 CD recording has an incredible mix of classics and newer tunes. You cannot go wrong with anything from El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico.
One of my very favorites is the Sonora Ponceña 45 Aniversario (live) CD. The Sonora Ponceña is regarded as one the best Salsa bands/groups ever and offer proof of this in this well executed 2 CD recording.
For modern Salsa, I recommend:
-MEL – Sin Miedo (DU Records 2001)
-Anything by the group DLG.
-T.M.C. – The Music Club (Sony Discos 2000)
-SonByFour-SB4 (Sony Discos 1999 and I believe there was a re-release with an extra song in 2000)
-Jay Lozada – Jay Lozada (Universal Music Latin America 2000)
Compilation CD’s are an excellent way to collect the best of current Salsa hits and special projects by groups of famous artists. For example, the live CD Combinación Perfecta – Familia RMM offers a great mix of Salsa by various artists from RMM Records. Another, Tributo a los Soneros by Sony Discos offers remakes of old/classic Salsa songs by the hottest and most stable Salsa artists of today. Yet another option is to pick up the CD titled SALSAHITS 2002 as wells as the 2001, 2000, 1999, and 1998, put out by Sony Discos.
Also, you may want to consider recordings by any of the following artists:
